Student Based Line Data

Interesting discussion with the students today when they created their visual survey.
Some examples :

Through the students surveys, it was interesting to see the impact other students have on their work. The arrows showing the relationships between their writing and others. Students see the importance of their peers with their writing.

Also interviewed students the same questions that I asked parents. Some areas that came up through discussion:

  1. Mum and Dad write when they are working
  2. Postcards and writing to grandparents doesn't happen often - (there needs to be a purpose)
  3. spelling is very important to students when they are writing
  4. They all had a strong sense that they were great writers but didn't see themselves as an author.
  5. No one really has a journal
  6. Authors write great stories because there is not mistakes, using verbs, interesting words

Parent Survey

Parent Survey:
Interesting to see how many children write at home - I really should have asked what types of writing do they do.

Parents are filling in the survey too. Very interesting hearing what they think is important for their students at primary. Interesting thoughts about how much they enjoyed writing at home and what parents are doing.

This was no surprise, I often receive emails/ see saw messages about their work and how great it is but really need to work on their spelling. The see saw app is used for students to 'journal' their ideas.

Parent Survey information here

Interesting comments about writing. Looking forward to seeing the comments at the end of my inquiry and see if any changes will be made with students.

Learner Agency

Students created their own learning intentions for their learning for their report writing - a powerful lesson where students were able to work out what they needed through. This is nothing new for these students (class) but it helped my target group understand what was required.
http://elearning.tki.org.nz/Teaching/Learner-agency :
  • Agency includes an awareness of the responsibility of ones own actions on the environment and on others. Every decision a learner makes, and action she or he takes, will impact on the thinking, behaviour or decisions of others – and vice versa.
  • Agency involves the initiative or self-regulation of the learner. Learners must have a belief that their behaviour and their approach to learning will make a difference for them in their learning context – in other words, a personal sense of agency.

Looking at a range of reports allowed students to discuss what reports are and where to find them.

How could reports be taught so all students are engaged. What learning experiences would get students engaged? What different ways could we engage these students? We have been so consumed with national standards and data driven teaching that we have lost the fun and enjoyment.

Writing reports should be fun and enjoyable - lets see where this photo takes us. Enjoy the moment!
